Fashion is considered the epitome of success, especially in the high-class world many athletes find themselves living in once they rise to fame. It’s no wonder many athletes choose to start their own clothing brands to share their love for clothes with the world. It’s one way they’re able to connect with fans all over the world while leaving their mark with something other than the sports they play.
Notable athletes including Russell Westbrook, Brandon Jennings, Kelly Oubre Jr, Chasson Randle, Serena Williams, Venus Williams, and Cristiano Ronaldo have all started their own unique clothing brands distinguishing their fashion choices from one another. They’ve all found a way to stay true to who they are while sharing their positively influential beliefs with their loyal followers.
Russell Westbrook, Houston Rockets athlete and owner of Honor The Gift, has notably launched himself into collaborations with Nike, Barney’s New York, as well as receiving coverage from Vogue, GQ, The New York Times styles section, and much more. The label is called “a brand of self-belief and dedication to honor the gift ‘he’ has given you,” which has a strong tie to Westbrook’s upbringing in Los Angeles. He includes graphic T-shirts, crewneck sweatshirts, hoodies, hats, and socks all ranging in price from $20 to $160 with everything made in Los Angeles.
Serena and Venus Williams have both launched their own separate fashion lines in support of their views towards women athletes owning their bodies and wearing the clothes that instantly make them feel powerful.
Venus Williams created a fitness clothing line called EleVen, dedicated to the individuality every woman possesses. She also released a Glam collection, stating “I created EleVen to give women high-quality activewear that they not only feel fabulous in, but perform at their best – regardless of the activity…She’s a strong woman, make no mistake about that, but also kindhearted and authentic. The Glam collection embodies the essence of her through combining soft and bold colours of melon, pink and navy to exude her powerful yet feminine vibe.”
Serena Williams debuts S by Serena as a display of 1990s street fashion with a modern touch while ensuring the line stays inclusive to every woman out there. “It was important for me to create different things for different people and different body types. I like the word inclusivity as opposed to exclusive because I feel like when you’re inclusive, it just makes a difference and it’s where we should be heading more now,” she mentions.
There’s also the opportunity for fans to get involved with her cause by allowing visitors to share what their “S” stands for. The site includes stories of strength, solidarity, survivors, sisterhood, and support – all vital areas where women are proud to stand alongside their sisters from all over the world.
Phoenix Suns athlete Kelly Oubre Jr released his clothing line Dope Soul this year with the idea that everyone should be able to live a free, self-expressive lifestyle. The first line titled “Quarantine and Chill” features sweatshirts, sweatpants and t-shirts with the words “Dope Soul” and a cartoonish leaky skull logo. It’s the first to come from the young basketball player who’s always dreamed of having his own clothing line.
“You are free to manifest your own destiny, unaffected by negative energy and without letting yourself be defined by any one thing,” Oubre Jr said.
Former Golden State Warriors player Chasson Randle started sketching designs as a hobby, which then quickly became a passion project where he could share his vision for the brand “Volhard” – the Dutch word for perseverance. The high-end fashion and lifestyle brand combines fashion and storytelling with the acronym meaning”Victors Of Life’s Hardships And Righteous Deviants.”
“As a brand, we represent sharp strength, fearless edginess, and stylish elegance. Volhard aims to push its way to the forefront of progressive luxury streetwear,” Randle said.
Established in 2018, basketball player Brandon Jennings created the TUFF CROWD clothing line filled with streetwear pieces perfect for the everyday grind. The brand is positively speaking about spreading Happiness, Love, Mental Health, Good Vibes, Good Energy, Entertainment and Self Love with other people. It’s the best way to live and find common ground with other individuals.
“I came up with the brand name based on my rough life experiences. At a young age, I learned life wasn’t easy. No matter how much I tried to please people it was never enough. People always respected my money but not my skin tone. Up’s and downs with my family made me realize, we are all just human. I’ve had to learn not to take things so personally.
At the end of the day, life is just a TUFF CROWD,” Brandon Jennings said.

One of the most notable soccer players, Cristiano Ronaldo, released CR7 alongside the popular brand Nike. His clothing line is based on his philosophy in life, which is to have fun while staying committed to your biggest dress, paying attention to detail, and never forgetting to relax. It features clothing from kid’s sizes, adults, and sneakers all coming together to balance the everyday look.
His encouraging message with the line is:
#Don’t take yourself too seriously
#To be the best you need the best
#Live your dream and never wake up
#Keep your eye on the ball
#Play your own game
#Stand out in the crowd, but be yourself
