Space Jam fans around the world have waited over 20 years since the original movie premiered with Michael Jordan. This week, production for the movie’s sequel, Space Jam: A New Legacy has officially wrapped.

The movie’s lead star, LeBron James gave an inspiring speech to the cast and crew about how honored he is to be a part of such an amazing opportunity.

“I’m gonna be completely honest with you guys, when I found out about the project I was like its Space Jam! It’s a movie that I grew up watching,” James said. “People in the movie that I idolize. I was like absolutely, I gotta do it. There’s no way I can turn down Space Jam!”

James continues reminiscing on his childhood in Akron. “I’m just a small kid from Akron, Ohio– a very small town outside of Cleveland. From a single-parent household, I’m the only child, my mother had absolutely nothing,” he told the cast and crew. “She was walking around high school when she was 16 years old and she was pregnant with me as a high school sophomore. So, I’m really not supposed to be here.”

“Growing up in the inner city, as an African-American kid, there’s no way you’re supposed to fucking make it out,” he continued. “And, the fact that I’m who I am as an African-American adult now with three kids of my own, and I made it out of the situations that I was in…this shit is like extra credit for me, man.”

The LeBron James Family Foundation took to Twitter to reveal the first ever look at James in his Space Jam jersey.

TMZ captured the audio of James’ post production speech. You can listen to the entire three-minute clip below. Space Jam: A New Legacy is scheduled to release July 16th, 2021.
