Charlotte Hornets owner, Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin have joined together to create a NASCAR team with Bubba Wallace as the driver.
Wallace is the only Black driver at NASCAR’s top level. This partnership comes at a time when diversity and social change is the forefront of many major brands in America.
“Historically, NASCAR has struggled with diversity and there have been few Black owners,” Jordan said in a statement. “The timing seemed perfect, as NASCAR is evolving and embracing social change more and more.”
In June, Wallace influenced NASCAR President Steve Phelps to ban the use of the Confederate flag at racing events.
This collaboration between Jordan, Wallace and Hamlin speaks volumes for the future of NASCAR owners.
