13 time Grammy award winner Pharrell Williams launched an initiative this week in an effort to teach music coding to students. Partnering with Amazon and Georgia Tech, the collaboration initiative is being dubbed Your Voice Is Power and will help middle and high school students in the United States and Canada. The program is available to all students in both countries.
The initiative will be an online program that allows students to learn mixing and mastering tracks via Georgia Tech’s EarSketch coding platform. Consisting of five teaching modules regarding coding – the program will also tackle another prominent issue – racial justice. Discussions between teachers and students regarding racial justice are planned to be a part of the program, further encouraging the discussion around social reform and the Black Lives Matter movement.
To culminate the Your Voice is Power initiative – a special contest is being held for the students. Using Georgia Tech’s EarSketch program, participants will be eligible for a contest to remix Pharrell’s single “Entrepreneur”. The students are also required to add in their own vocals to the track
It is fitting for the music icon to embark on an initiative regarding both education and racial justice. Just over a month ago, Pharrell Williams launched his nonprofit YELLOW. The organization focuses on empowering underprivileged youth through education. Ultimately, Mr. Williams hopes to “even the odds” for children everywhere, regardless of their race, religion or financial wellbeing of their family.
We’ll have to wait and see what companies or organizations Pharrell and his nonprofit collaborate with next. While artists like Big Sean are partnering with corporations like ESPN for music deals (read our story on that here), Pharrell is partnering with others to make a positive change for children all across North America.
