Just days after the passing of Kobe Bryant and his 13-year old daughter Gianna Bryant in late January visual artists around the world painted tributes of the two to honor their memories.
Marketer and social media consultant Mike Asner noticed the increase of street art and decided to create a tool for fans to use to pinpoint these murals for commemoration.
Asner’s KobeMural is an interactive map and an Instagram account that serves as a catalogue of Kobe and Giana murals worldwide.
Although his creation is for fans to visit and honor the Bryant’s, Asner also created this platform to support the talented artists behind the murals.
“Several days after the incident, I noticed murals going up throughout LA and photos of them on Instagram,” Asner tells VoyageLA. “I identified quickly that these should be organized for families, fans and visitors with specific mural locations and promotion of all artists.”
The KobeMural project started in February with just 30 murals on the map. Today, the mural count has reached 305; 200 murals in Southern California, 255 murals in the United States and 50 murals internationally.
